Sentinel Works

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sentinel Works are a former factory building in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1991 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The factory was built in 1904 for the Alley and MacLellan company . It was at this site that the Sentinel was developed, which was later manufactured in the English factories of the Sentinel Wagon Works . The Sentinel Works had their own foundry and were mainly used to produce ships for inland waters. Around 500 ships were built there as kits and assembled at their destination. Between 1918 and 1937 the factory was owned by Beardmores and was bought by the Weir Group in 1960 .

In 1993 an application for demolition was denied. This was in connection with the relocation of a railway depot as part of the expansion of the M74 . At this point, the factory had been idle for an undisclosed period. In the course of the following decades, the building's condition deteriorated. All the glazing is missing today and the concrete of the damp masonry is partially flaking off. In 1994, the Sentinel Works were therefore included in the Scottish register of endangered listed structures. In 2014, their condition was classified as very poor and at the same time high risk.

description

The Sentinel Works are located in an industrial area in south-east Glasgow. During the construction period, the innovative reinforced concrete construction based on Hennebique was used. It is now the third oldest preserved reinforced concrete structure in the United Kingdom . The flat roof construction anticipates the daylight-flooded production facilities based on the American model, which would later also appear in England. The designer Archibald Leitch is responsible for the planning and construction in cooperation with the architectural office Brand & Lithgow . The south-facing front facade of the four-story building on Jessie Street is twelve axes wide; the side facades are three axes wide.
