Serial Presence Detect ( SPD ) is a method for the automatic configuration of memory modules in computer systems (mainly in personal computers ).

The information relevant to the memory module ( memory capacity , supply voltage , timing , requirements for the refresh , latency , etc.) is typically stored on a separate read-only memory (serial EEPROM module). The information stored there comprises between 128 and 256 bytes.

PCs carry out a self-test ( power-on self-test , POST) after being switched on; this includes u. a. the automatic detection and configuration of the installed hardware . In this context, the information is read from the EEPROM and the memory controller is then adapted (configured) to the built-in memory.
