The Shai Wildlife Reserve ( Shai Hills Game Production Reserve ) is an animal reserve in Ghana .

location

The reserve is located in the south of the country, about 50 kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of the capital Accra in the Greater Accra Region .

description

This reserve was founded in 1971, it is located in a striking hilly landscape - the Shai Hills - in the savannah and has a size of 4860 hectares. It is worth mentioning some caves that are also of archaeological importance. There are 31 species of mammals, 13 different species of reptiles and 175 species of birds in the reserve. The bog antelope (zoolg .: Kobus Kob) is particularly worth mentioning here, as it was regarded as a sacred animal by the Shai, an ethnic group that was expelled 100 years ago.

Archaeological finds in the field and the already mentioned caves show early human settlements and animal species that have since disappeared in the region - for example buffalo .
