Shamian ( Chinese  沙 面 岛 , Pinyin Shāmiàn Dǎo ) is an island in Guangzhou , in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong . From the 18th to the mid-19th century, Shamian was the only place in China where western merchants were allowed to set up their warehouses and factories. In 1856 the island was administratively divided into two concessions , one British and one French. Shamian is about 0.3 km². From administrative point of view, the island Shamian is identical with the road district Shamian (沙面街道), a road of 22 quarters of the municipality Liwan of Guangzhou.

At present Shamian is the location of many consulates general and is visited by many tourists. Historic buildings, small parks and avenues make it one of the most romantic places in Guangzhou. There are a few hotels, a youth hostel, restaurants and shops on Shamian, which mainly sell souvenirs, rarities and works of art.

The colonial-style historic buildings are on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .

Administrative structure

The street neighborhood Shamian consists of two residential communities together. These are:

  • Residential community Cuizhou (翠 洲 社区);
  • Residents Community Etan (鹅潭社区).
