Sheng-Ching Chang

Sheng-Ching Chang ( 張 省 卿 born 1963 in Tainan , Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese art historian and professor at the Faculty of History at Fu-Jen University in Taipeih.

Life

Chang graduated from Fu Jen University in Taipeih with a BA in history major and international trade minor. From 1986 to 1995 she also studied art history and history at the University of Hamburg in Germany with her thesis “ The portrait of Johann Adam Schall von Bell in Athanasius Kircher's ' China illustrata '”. From 1996 to 2002 she completed her doctorate in art history at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where she wrote her doctoral thesis “ The image of China in nature and landscape by Athanasius Kircher's 'China illustrata' (1667) and the influence of this work on the development of chinoiserie and the European art ” , PhD.

From 1988 to 1997, Chang worked as a journalist for the Taiwanese newspapers Independent Morning Post , Independent Evening Post and Independent Weekly Post and as a writer for the magazines Artist, ARTIMA and Art of Collection in Taipeih and in the 1990s in Hong Kong. She was also a photo reporter for the Taiwanese edition of National Geographic Magazine and editor for the German magazines Diskus and Pen , on the topics of the development of art and culture in Europe and Asia, history, society, politics, human rights and environmental protection.

Chang worked from 2002 to 2006 as an assistant professor of history and art history at Fu Jen University, Taipeih National University of Arts, and National Taiwan University of Arts in Taipeih. She was later appointed Full Associate Professor (2009) and Full Professor (2016) in the History Department and the Graduate Institute of Fu Jen University. In 2018 she was an Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Art History at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipeih. Her research focus is European art history in a global context, the history of artistic and cultural exchange between East and West, the methodology of art history and the history of colonial urban development.

Since 2005, Chang and her colleagues at Fu Jen University have organized annual conferences on the subject of "History of Cultural Exchange", as well as a series of annual lectures (2008–) and workshops (2011–) on subjects of "World History". She has organized panels at institutions across Asia and Europe, including the Institute of History at Oxford University, the University of Munich, the Oriental Institute at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, the Taipeih National Palace Museum and the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing . In 2019 Chang gave lectures at the Jagiellonian University on "Chinese Art History and Its Globalization" (with the following six topics: "Chinese Cities: Beijing", "Chinese Gardens: Suzhou Gardens", "Chinese Architecture: Nanjing Pagoda", " Chinese painting: landscape painting ”,“ Chinese sculpture: Buddha statues ”and“ Chinese handicrafts: blue and white porcelain ”). She also edited the "Fu Jen Historical Journal", reviewed the "Journal of Fine Arts" at the National University of the Arts in Taipeih and participated as a jury member in decision-making regarding the award of scholarships.

  • 2007–2008: Scholarship from the National Science Council of Taiwan: Influence of urban planning in the German style on the administrative buildings in downtown Taipei by the Japanese colonial administration
  • 2006–2009, 2013: Received five annual Fu Jen University awards for research achievements
  • 2010–2011: Scholarship from the National Science Council of Taiwan: Reconstruction of Chinese-style gardens in Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries
  • 2011–2012: Scholarship from the National Science Council of Taiwan: Reconstruction of gardens in the Chinese style in eastern Germany in the last half of the 18th century using the example of the Wörlitz Garden (1700-1813)
