Sherlock Express is a deduction game by the French game designer Henri Kermarrec , which was released in 2019 as an English and multilingual version by the publisher Blue Orange Games and in German by Huch! has appeared.

Theme and equipment

Sherlock Express is a simple combination game in which the players have to find the perpetrator of a criminal case through logical exclusion. Thematically, the players help the detective Sherlock, based on Sherlock Holmes , to identify the accomplice of his opponent Moriarty in a criminal case in each round.

In addition to instructions, the game material consists of 27 round cards with the suspects in different combinations of features and backgrounds, and 36 alibi cards, which are also round.

Style of play

Before the game starts, shuffle all suspect cards and all alibi cards. The alibi cards are evenly distributed to the other players and there, without picking up or looking at them, laid out as a face-down pile. The suspect cards are also placed face down in the middle of the table, the top six cards with suspects are laid out face up around them.

A starting player (according to the instructions of the player who last read a detective or adventure novel) begins the game by revealing the top of the alibi cards in front of him. All other players follow in clockwise order and each reveal one card. The alibi cards show either an accessory, an animal, or a background that may be present on the suspect cards. Each of the suspect cards on display that have one of these characteristics receives an alibi from the card and can thus be excluded as a perpetrator. As soon as a player is of the opinion that there is only one suspect, he taps this one. If there is no longer any question of suspect, Moriarty himself is the culprit and whoever recognizes this first taps the top of the face-down cards. The suspicion is then checked and if it is correct, the other player receives the corresponding card as victory point. If the suspicion is wrong, the player is eliminated from the round. The round ends when the perpetrator has been clearly identified.

After the round, the suspects on display are replaced by the next 6 cards from the suspect pile and the alibi cards of the other players are shuffled and laid out, then a new round begins. The game ends as soon as a player has solved five cases and thus won five victory points. That player wins the game.

Variant false alibis

In the False Alibis variant , an alibi becomes ineffective as soon as it is revealed for the second time and reveals the perpetrator. If this happens, the other players have to touch two suspects who have this alibi, or, if the alibi does not appear, they have to guess Moriarty himself. The player who succeeds in this first may take both cards, then they are exchanged and the current round continues.
