Shift_JIS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shift_JIS ( abbreviation SJIS) is a character encoding for the Japanese script , developed by the Japanese company ASCII in cooperation with Microsoft . It is based on the standard JIS X 0208 ( JIS ), moves ( shift ) but byte values by 64 additional Katakana accommodate character in the range of up to 0xA0 0xDF.

Contrary to the conventional JIS encoding Shift_JIS needs an 8- bit - medium for the transmission . Unlike the competing 8-bit EUC format , Shift_JIS only guarantees that the first byte is in the upper ASCII range. The value of the second byte can be either high or low. This makes reliable Shift_JIS detection difficult.

In addition to EUC, Shift_JIS occurs mainly in Japanese websites, less often in ISO-2022-JP , while otherwise Unicode (especially UTF-8 ) is preferred.
