Shwezigon Pagoda

The Shwezigon Pagoda ( Burmese ရွှေ စည်း ခုံ ဘုရား ) is a Buddhist stupa in Bagan - Nyaung U , Myanmar .

history

It was started in 1059 under King Anawrahta and completed in 1110 under King Kyanzittha . It houses the most valuable Buddha relics and therefore enjoys the highest veneration among Buddhist believers.

description

On three square terraces, which taper towards the top, there is initially an octagonal platform, to which stairs lead up on all four sides. On top of it stands the bell-shaped stupa body with the turban attached (rings tapering ), the double lotus, the banana bud and finally the Hti , in keeping with the Upper Burmese stupa style. On the corners of the third terrace, the pagoda sits more or less on a smaller scale; the side walls of the terraces originally adorned 550 green glazed terracotta panels with representations of the Jatakas . The 49 m long sides of the lower terrace are surrounded by stylized flowers and sacrificial bowls, the 49 m high stupa is completely covered with gold leaf.
Numerous outbuildings surround the main stupa, including four shrines with standing Buddhas of the present world ages and a hall for the nats .
