A locking plate is a washer made of soft sheet steel for the positive locking of nuts , in particular locknuts , from twisting . A locking plate has a tongue on the inside diameter, which engages in a groove in a stationary machine part or an axle or shaft . On the outer diameter there are one or more tongues that can be knocked into a groove of a locknut or around the hexagon of a nut in order to prevent the nut from turning or loosening unintentionally.
