Siderosthen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siderosthen is a blue-black rust protection , sealing and insulating paint that was used around 1900. It is resistant to moisture and was especially used to protect iron from rust. Dam walls built according to the so-called Intze principle were also sealed with it.

It is a mixture of Fettgasteer products (Ölgasteer) with Goudron (tar) and sulfur. The paint is a solution of an asphalt-like mass in light hydrocarbons . It contains neither a mineral pigment nor an oil varnish. When painting, the solvent evaporates and the asphalt-like mass remains as a dry, elastic coating that does not harden.

The name Siderosthen was registered as a trademark in Luxembourg in 1898 by the stock company for asphalting and roofing, formerly Johannes Jeserich, Berlin.

Siderosthen is suspected of being harmful to health due to the evaporation of toxic gases.
