Infirmary

The Siechknecht had during the time of plague the task of the patients in the hospitals to carry. Because of the risk of contagion, the authorities had enormous difficulty in recruiting prisoners. In Vienna, in the year of the plague in 1679, criminals from prisons were committed to this office. Because of the atrocities that were said of him, in the course of time a true wreath of legends was formed around the figure of the infirmary. The term `` Siechknecht '' for sick people during the plague is used for Vienna in the early modern period.
