Breaking a seal is the unauthorized damage, detachment or rendering unrecognizable to an official seal intended to be locked, denoted or confiscated , as well as the other removal of the official lock caused by such a seal.

The act is punishable in Germany according to § 136 StGB and is punished with a penalty of imprisonment of up to one year or a fine. In Austria, breaking the seal is also punishable according to § 272 StGB , in Switzerland according to Art. 290 StGB .
