A silhouette cutting process is a process that enables a digital 3D reconstruction of any object shape to be obtained from digital images.

Images are recorded from predetermined positions around the object over at least two axes. The individual recordings are made digitally with one or more cameras, which are either permanently installed in front of the turntable on which the object is located, or are guided around the object via definable positions. Every image is recorded from a defined angle until the object is captured from all sides.

The digital 1: 1 reconstruction of the object shape basically takes place in three steps (see Fig. 3). In the first step, knowledge about the room can be obtained by determining the room by making the camera setting, alignment and positioning and with the help of a calibration pattern . In the second step, the objects photo-optically detected to be similar to a silhouette optional and reconstructed by segmentation of the input images from object silhouettes the object shape. The object is shown as a triangular network, a so-called polygon network (see Figure 1). In the third step, the polygons are manually or automatically with artificial texture or photo texture occupied (see Fig. 2). If a homogeneous overall impression is achieved when using the photo texture, the reconstructed object appears lifelike.

Lifelike 3D objects created using silhouette cutting processes represent an essential building block for the so-called " Internet of Things " and are understood as a basic requirement for lifelike worlds, rooms, objects and augmented reality in 3D.
