Sim Farm is an economic simulation by the Maxis company , which simulates the structure and management of a farm. It belongs to the Sim series, which has become very well known primarily through the SimCity games. It was released in 1993 for MS-DOS and Windows and in 1994 for Mac OS . The designers were Eric Albers and Michael Perry.

Game principle and structure

Game objective

The aim of the game is to build and expand your own farm and earn money with it. You start with a farm that was built on 3 × 3 plots. Apart from the starting capital of $ 40,000 and the main building, you don't own anything. During the game, you can expand your own property by purchasing additional parcels and thus plant additional fields and breed additional animals. If the equity rises in the game, the courtyard building is gradually transformed into a villa with a pool and hammocks.

Basic procedure

Since there are mainly two ways to earn money in Sim Farm , you should concentrate on one of the two ways at the beginning. Since you can make profits faster with arable farming, it is preferable to cattle breeding. So you start to build the existing space as optimally as possible with fields, barns, paths and silos. In addition, several tractors, combine harvesters, trucks and equipment as well as the seeds and fertilizer etc. are procured. A combine harvester is not required for every crop, so it can be omitted under certain circumstances. Once all of this has been created, it depends on the weather and soil conditions on the map whether an irrigation or drainage system is created or trees are planted to protect against wind erosion.

country

Land is the basis of all economic activity in Sim Farm . All buildings, fields and other facilities are erected on this. The land is divided into small square parcels (consisting of 3 × 3 smaller square fields). At the beginning, the prospective farmer has an area of 4 × 4 plots available to take the first steps.

city

The farmer is not alone on a Sim Farm card, but shares the space with a town that grows by a parcel from year to year. Each time the city is expanded, the player can decide what should be built in the new district. He has the choice between an airport, residential area, amusement park, commercial and industrial area.

There is no practical use in the city's buildings, except for the airfield. From here you can supply large areas with pesticides, herbicides or fungicides in a short time with a purchased plane (just not with fertilizer). This saves a tremendous amount of time and money on large farms, as one load for the aircraft costs less than the corresponding number of barrels that would be required to spray the fields.

The city also functions as a market for agricultural products.

Buildings / fixed facilities

  • Courtyard / main building
  • Barn (large / small)
  • Stable (large / small)
  • Silo (large / small)
  • Field & path (paved path, or possibly one or the other field path)
  • Windmill & pump
  • Moat & valve
  • Water trough & food balls
  • Fence & gates

Machines and vehicles

The tractor pulls the devices to the field in order to do the desired work there.
The combine harvests the crops from the fields and loads them onto the truck.
  • truck
The truck transports the harvest from the field to the silo for storage and from there to the market in the city. If there is no silo, it is transported directly to the city for sale.
  • plow
The plow is needed to plow the topsoil before sowing so that the fruit is not brought into the previously used layer.
With the help of this machine, the seeds are brought into the ground.
  • syringe
Fertilizers , fungicides , herbicides and pesticides are spread over the fields from the sprayer.
  • plane
The airplane is an alternative to the syringe, but an airport in the city is required for it to take off and land. The use is only worthwhile with a large number of fields.

agriculture

Farming is the most productive way to make money at Sim Farm . You can also grow various crops in the fields and sell them after the harvest. There are basically two types of plants. One species only has to be planted once and can be harvested again and again for years to come, the other has to be sown anew every year.

The first variant includes oranges, wine and apples. The second variant includes, for example, strawberries, wheat, corn and peanuts.

Livestock

Livestock is the second way to make money, but it can take a long time until you can make a profit for the first time by selling bred animals. You can choose from horses, cows, pigs and sheep.
