Simon Schubert (* 1976 in Cologne ) is a German sculptor.

Life

During his studies, Simon Schubert was a master student of Irmin Kamp at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and assistant to Professor Paul Good . In 2008 he was awarded the ZVAB-Phönix Art Prize. He is married to the artist Cosima Hawemann.

Work

Schubert's paper works are created through a complex process of folding and creasing , through which the large sheets of paper achieve a three-dimensional quality and three-dimensionality. With this technique, the artist creates perspectively distorted interiors, long corridors and steep flights of stairs within the respective architecture. His often life-size sculptures disappear behind thick hair and seem to turn their backs on the viewer, from whichever direction he tries to approach them. Loneliness, isolation, loss and dissolution are the recurring themes in Schubert's work.
