Model representation of a sinuscopy

Sinuscopy (Greek skopeĩn, to look at ') is an examination of the maxillary sinus with an endoscope to diagnose diseases of the maxillary sinus. Depending on the findings, minor medical interventions are carried out during the examination.

Anatomy and description of the maxillary sinus

The maxillary sinus is one of the sinuses . It is connected to the middle nasal passage via the nasal and jaw opening (aperture nasomaxillaris). The maxillary sinus is covered with mucous membrane and is usually filled with air. The shape is pyramid-like and the volume is about 12-15 ml.

scope of application

The examination is carried out if diseases in the maxillary sinus are suspected. The symptoms differ depending on the disease. In many cases the patient is symptom-free. Furthermore, there may be headache , secretions come or swollen mucosa. In addition, nasal breathing problems can occur.

A rhinoscopy can precede the sinuscopy for better diagnosis. The maxillary sinoscopy is then used to distinguish benign from malignant findings and from inflammatory changes.

Investigation process

A sinuscopy may under local anesthesia or general anesthesia are performed. An endoscope, a narrow, optical device, is used for the examination. This is inserted into the maxillary sinus through a nasal passage and the connecting passage. In certain cases, the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus is finely drilled from the oral vestibule . Now the mucous membrane in the maxillary sinus can be examined. Samples are taken from the mucous membrane for further histology . Furthermore, even small growths or changes in the mucous membrane such as a polyp or a cyst can be removed during this treatment . After the procedure, nasal packs are inserted to collect blood and wound exudate.

Complications

Among other things, disorders in nearby organs, bleeding , secondary bleeding , wound healing disorders , inflammation or drying of the nasal mucosa can occur. Numbness and paralysis rarely occur due to nerve injuries. These complications can affect smell and lead to breathing problems.

Notes - Before and after surgery

In certain cases, blood clotting drugs such as Marcumar or ASA may not be taken before the operation . In the case of a sinuscopy under local anesthesia, you must not drink anything two hours before the procedure, and you must not smoke or eat anything four hours before. These times are longer if the procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

In the case of an outpatient operation, due to the effects of the medication, it is not possible to drive for up to 24 hours after the operation . The nose should not be blown for a few days and heat should be avoided. In the case of an operation via the oral vestibule, it is advisable not to brush your teeth for several days and not to eat solid foods.
