Parakeet (prison language)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term parakeet refers to a sex offender in the sociolect of prison inmates (prison language). The term is mostly used for pedophile offenders , but is also used synonymously for sex offenders in general. Sex offenders are mostly at the bottom of the parallel society of penal institutions and are despised. The term parakeet is derived from the term morality criminal for sex criminals, which was previously used more frequently . Prisoners who refuse to talk about their actions with fellow prisoners are often suspected of being parakeets. To protect these prisoners from their fellow prisoners, the prison administration often isolates them from other prisoners or places them in individual cells.
