Cannon Ball is an American settlement in Sioux County , North Dakota . Cannon Ball is not a community in the sense of American law, but a census-designated place a 'settlement area defined for statistical purposes'. Cannon Ball provides a representative to the Tribal Council of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the government of Standing Rock. In the last election, Cody Two Bears was elected to represent the district. One of the tribe's two game casinos is located in Cannon Ball, the Prairie Knights Casino & Resort . The casino is the county's largest employer.
According to a 2010 census, the population was 875. Cannon Ball is part of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and is almost exclusively inhabited by Sioux Indians of the Dakota and Lakota tribe. Cannon Ball became known worldwide through the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline . The route of the pipeline is just a few miles north of the Morton County settlement . In 2016, several protest camps were set up on the settlement area. In February 2017, the protest camps were disbanded under pressure from the Cannon Ball district administration. One of the reasons was the casino game, as the protests blocked a bridge over the Cannon Ball River, and visitors from Bismarck (capital of North Dakota) had to take long detours, and this led to a decline in attendance.
