Lelievlet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lelievlet is the most common steel sailing and rowing boat used by the Dutch scouts' sea scouts . It is also used by many sea scouts in Flanders and the National Water Activity Center (NWAC) of the Irish Scouts in Killaloe. Its design is based on the Beenhakkervlet, a type of steel dinghy often used on barges, and its name is derived from the international boy scout logo, the boy scout lily .

history

Up until the 1950s, the Dutch sea scouts used many different boats. Often these were abandoned navy lifeboats or other types of boats. These boats were almost full of wood, which made them expensive to maintain in terms of time and cost. It was also difficult to find sources of parts to enable repairs. This situation asked for a project to identify a standard vehicle. The standard boat also made it easier to conduct regattas as all boats were of the same class. The vehicle requirements were as follows:

In 1955, the Dutch scouts were looking for a boat that met these requirements and they were interested in a steel rowing boat designed by Teunis Beenhakker, Kinderdijk. He had created a design for a rowing boat and motor boat for inland navigation. The group saw something in the design and Mr. ALJ Stockmann, skipper with Titus Brandsmagroep in Breda and commissioner at the Katholieke Verkenners (Catholic scouts), took over the design so that it could be used as a sailing boat. In 1956, Teunis Beenhakker built two hulls on a trial basis. He made two almost identical hulls: one 4.6 m and the other 5.60 m. Both were built as sailing boats with 12½ m² sails. Ultimately, the 5.6 m boat was chosen as the most suitable.

The lelievlet, as predicted, was a huge success. By 2006 over 1600 Lelievlets had been built in the Netherlands. The number '1' of the Lelievlet still exists and is still under the flag of the Titus Brandsma Group from Breda.

There are now also a large number of hulls from vmbo schools built under license under the flag of the Botenbouwpoject Vletten op de Maas (Vlets on the Meuse).
