Skin Alley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skin Alley was a British progressive rock band that existed from 1968 to 1974.

Band history

Thomas Crimble (bass, keyboards, vocals), Alvin Pope (drums), Krzysztof Henryk Juszkiewicz (keyboards) and Bob James (saxophone, guitar) recorded their debut album in 1969, which came out in early 1970. Their mix of folk, jazz and rock received good reviews and was successful on stage.

During the recording of the second album To Pagham & Beyond (1970), Crimble went to Hawkwind and helped organize the Glastonbury Festival . Nick Graham (previously at Atomic Rooster ) came on for him . Pope was later replaced by Tony Knight (real name Tony Brown), previously with The Chessmen and Bronx Cheer. With the new members, the group's music with string and wind arrangements went more towards the mainstream.

With their move from CBS to Transatlantic Records and a rockier sound, they also became better known in the United States, where Stax signed them as the first European band. However, the hoped-for big breakthrough did not materialize and the band broke up after the fourth album.
