Under long underwear is meant functional underwear is worn when skiing. When clad according to the so-called onion skin principle , it forms the bottom layer and is also known as the base layer. It is the only piece of clothing that lies directly on the body and covers the feet, legs and the upper body. In contrast to normal underwear, ski underwear is made from special materials such as merino wool . The aim of this underwear is to transport sweat away from the body quickly in order to prevent it from cooling down.

materials

For the production of long underwear both are chemical fibers and natural fibers as well as a mixture of two materials (so-called. Mixed fabric ) was used.

Natural fiber

Merino wool is mainly used for natural fibers. Due to the antibacterial effect, this has a very low odor and can therefore be worn for several days in a row without taking on an unpleasant odor. Although natural fibers cannot release body sweat as well as synthetic fibers, they are still popular because they can absorb up to a third of their mass in liquid without feeling wet. Merino wool was first used in 1994 by the Icebreaker company and is still processed by the company on a large scale today.

Chemical fiber

In ski underwear made of chemical fibers, polyester, nylon (polyamide), polyacrylic and polyurethane (elastane) are used. Man-made fibers can absorb sweat very quickly and pass it on to the next layer of clothing. This means that the wearer is always kept dry and the body can warm up well and does not cool down so quickly. However, odor-causing bacteria can develop in man-made fibers. To prevent this, silver ions are woven into the material, which, however, can trigger so-called textile dermatitis in some wearers.

Types of ski underwear

  • One-piece - pants and upper body clothing are firmly connected to each other. The pants reach down to over the ankle, on the arms to the arm joints and close at the neck.
  • Two-piece suit - pants and upper body clothing are not connected to each other.
  • Three-quarter variant of the above categories. The trousers reach to the knee joint, the outerwear to the elbow.
