Slice (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slice (English for breakfast, slice ) in the context of electronic music means that portion of a sample .

Slices are mostly used when working with drum samples that provide a continuous basic rhythm through constant repetition (so-called drum loops ).

Drum loops initially have a fixed speed. The problem often arises that you want to use a drum loop in a piece of music whose speed differs from that of the drum loop. For this purpose, it is advisable to cut the drum loop into individual parts in such a way that each of these individual parts - every slice - represents a beat. Then you can change the tempo of the drum loop within certain limits without changing the sound impression by moving the slices apart or together. Another advantage of this method is that you can create variations of the drum loop by working with slices: by changing the sequence of the slices, their frequency, etc.

A number of computer programs support working with slices by automatically dividing samples into slices and appropriately filling the gaps that arise when the slices are moved apart. One of the first programs of this type was ReCycle from Propellerhead Software ; meanwhile, a number of these so-called Beatslicers are available.
