SmartDrive

SmartDrive is a program that was part of MS-DOS from version 4.01 and up until the last version 6.22 was used together with Windows 3.x for speed optimization through intermediate storage in the main memory . The data throughput of hard disks has been significantly increased by buffering frequently used data in the main memory .

In the early MS-DOS versions, SmartDrive was started by calling up the device driver SMARTDRV.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS, in later versions this was replaced by the executable file SMARTDRV.EXE , which could also be CONFIG.SYSloaded via the , but could also be called via the AUTOEXEC.BATor via the command prompt .
