Smart proxy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In digital video editing, smart proxy refers to the technology of automatically replacing high-resolution video material during processing with a low-resolution copy in order to enable faster work.

Details

Depending on the computing power and the format of the raw material in terms of image resolution and data compression , so much time can be required to decode the raw data that it is no longer possible to work smoothly in the timeline in real time . In order to reduce the resulting waiting times for the user, some video editing programs use Smart Proxy technology.

The raw material is also converted into a lower resolution format, saved and only used to display the preview images, which means that they can be displayed more fluently and the video is easier to edit.

The lower quality of the preview data has no influence on the final result of the processing, as the final version is still composed of the higher-quality raw data.

The creation of the preview data, however, requires additional computing time and storage space before the actual start of the work.
