Chiasmodon niger is a predatory deep-sea fish from the family of the black snake (Chiasmodontidae).
features
Chiasmodon niger reaches a body length of 25 centimeters. The long-toothed mouth and stomach are extremely flexible, so that prey larger than the fish can be swallowed. Like all species of the family it has two separate dorsal fins with a total of about 34 to 40 fin rays , of which 26 to 29 are soft rays. In front of the anal fin it has a hard fin spine, the fin consists of 26 to 29 soft rays. The caudal fin is supported by nine rays. Scales and luminous organs are missing.
distribution and habitat
Chiasmodon niger is distributed worldwide in deep sea zones between 700 and over 2450 meters depth (bathypelagial) of all oceans. The main focus is on tropical and subtropical marine areas.
Systematics
As a type species , Chiasmodon niger forms, together with six other species, the genus Chiasmodon within the Black Schlinger. A more recent synonym is Ponerodon vastator Alcock, 1890.
Relationship with people
The fish has no commercial significance for humans and is not fished due to its habitat at depths of more than 700 meters. It is not on the IUCN's Red List of Endangered Species .
