Smoothing is a method of smoothing out short-term price fluctuations in speculative investments . If the performance is good, only part of the return is distributed and the rest is retained as a fluctuation reserve . This is used in bad times to compensate for the loss in value. A smoothed value will therefore generally be below the market value in times of rising capital markets, but slightly above it in falling markets.
