Snæbjörn Galti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Snøbjørn Galte Holmsteinsson ( Old Norwegian : Snæbjörn Galti ; * around 910, † around 978) was the first Norwegian to set foot in Greenland . His journey took place in 978.

After Gunnbjörn Úlfsson accidentally spotted some islands west of Iceland on a trip around the beginning of the 10th century, Galte led a group that wanted to colonize the east coast of Greenland. The attempt failed, however, and Galte was killed in an argument. A saga about the journey of Galte ( Snæbjörn saga galti ) has been lost.
