Sobor (Orthodoxy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sobor or Sabor (German: meeting) is a Slavic name for a council , i.e. H. a gathering of ecclesiastical dignitaries. Today a distinction is made between a (bishop's) synod (Russian архиерейский собор) and a local council (Russian поместный собор), at which not only bishops , but also other church dignitaries and legal representatives are present. The name is derived from the Church Slavonic word for assembly.

The first sobor of the Russian Orthodox Church took place in Kiev in 1051 . The Ukrainian Catholic Church also held regular meetings after it was founded in 1596. For the Ukrainian Orthodox Church , the Sobor of 1640 under the Metropolitan Petro Mohyla was of particular importance, in which numerous ecclesiastical lay people also took part.
