location

The Sokol station is located between the Aeroport and Voikovskaya stations of the Samoskvorezkaya line. It has two exits on both sides of the Leningradski Prospect arterial road , which turns into Leningrader Chaussee , also known as the M10 trunk road . The exits have no escalators and each have a vestibule building. The station's platform is ten meters below the surface.

History and architecture

The metro station opened on September 11, 1938, at the same time as the opening of the first section ( Teatralnaya - Sokol ) of the green line. Since the station served as the terminus of the line at that time, a train depot for the fleet of the Samoskvorezkaya line was built near it, which was also named Sokol and is still in operation today. Originally, the station only had one exit on the south side of Leningradski Prospect, while the north exit was only built in 1949.

The platform hall, which was built according to a design by the Jakowlew brothers, has resemblances to a cathedral with its vault-like ceiling construction, which is divided into two in the middle by a row of square supporting columns. In this form, the hall is strongly reminiscent of the Heidelberger Platz underground station in Berlin . The walls of the hall are clad with marble from Birobidzhan , the flooring is made of red and gray granite .
