Execution of the sun salutation

The sun salutation ( Sanskrit , सूर्य नमस्कार, Sūrya Namaskāra, literally: Glory be to you, sun ) also called "sun prayer" or "greeting to the sun" is a sequence of (usually) twelve yoga postures ( asanas ), which are dynamic, i . H. being practiced, merging in the breathing rhythm.

The sun salutation is well suited for warming up at the beginning of a yoga class or as an activation exercise in the morning (facing the rising sun). The series of exercises has an invigorating effect on body, mind and soul. The joints are mobilized, muscles and ligaments stretched and the cardiovascular system trained.

The sun salutation is intended to express the reverence for the sun and the deity, deep humility and gratitude towards them, which is also shown in the postures (folded hands, bows).

As a variant, there is the so-called little sun salutation , which is a little easier to carry out. There are also several versions of the small sun salutation.
