Sonoco is a US packaging company based in Hartsville , South Carolina . The Sonocos business areas are divided into the areas of “Consumer Packaging”, “Industrial Products” and “Protective Solutions”. The products offered include packaging for consumer and industrial goods, as well as special foam insulation for vehicle construction and protective packaging for large paper rolls. Furthermore, special adhesives are sold and recycling services are provided. The company subsidiary Sonoco Recycling operates 40 recycling plants worldwide and recycles around 3 million tons of paper, plastic and metal waste every year.
Sonoco was founded as So uthern No velty Co. in 1899 and changed its name to Sonoco Products Company in 1923. The company's first product was a conical thread spindle made from paper. Since the spindles that were widespread at the time were made of wood, the paper spindles were a novelty. In 2014, the Hockenheimer Weidenhammer Packaging Group was taken over by Sonoco. Sonoco is the largest company in the US state of South Carolina in terms of sales.
