Sophanene

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sophanene was an ancient province of Armenia in the Roman Empire .

In the Epic History of Faustus of Byzantium , a distinction is made between the large (Cop'k 'Mec) and the small Sophene (Cop'k' Šahēi), whereby the large one is called Sophanene in Byzantine sources. According to the description, it extended north of Amida on the Tigris River to the Nymphios . The area is described in Cod. Iust. 29.5 mentioned for the reorganization of the administration of Armenia and in the minutes of the Council of Chalcedon 451 both are named Sophene. However, it is not certain when the region became known under this name, especially since a distinction was not always made between Sophene and Sophanene.

To the west of Sophanene lay Ingilene , to the east it is called Arzanene . The province was part of the Roman Empire from 297 onwards , on its border with the Sassanid Empire . The place of worship Martyropolis was in the province.
