Sophompaneas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sophompaneas is the title of a neo-Latin tragedy about the story of Joseph and his brothers by Hugo Grotius and in it the Egyptian name of Joseph.

Grotius probably received a suggestion from Daniel Heinsius , who had recommended the subject in his treatise De Tragoediae Constitutione (On the Construction of Tragedy, Leiden 1611, 2nd ed. 1643) as the most tragic, because it moved him to tears.
