Sornhill Farm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sornhill Farm , also known as Sornhill House , is a manor house near the Scottish town of Galston in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1995.

description

The building is located off the B7037 about three kilometers southeast of Galston. The exact year of construction is not known, the earliest year recorded on a lintel is 1660. The building has a roughly L-shaped floor plan. The main wing was originally designed as a three-storey building, but the false ceiling on the top floor has been removed in the meantime. A plaque at the fireplace is the year of 1683 in connection with the initials R. N. and B. N. on. The individual floors are accessible via a rectangular stair tower with a spiral staircase. The entrance area is also located there, but it has been redesigned and covers the original entrance door.

The original small windows are still occasionally installed. In some cases, however, the window openings were enlarged and larger windows were used. Numerous lintels are provided with inscriptions, but these are often washed out and illegible. The building closes with a slate-covered gable roof that is worked with stepped gables . Stables from the late 18th century are adjacent to the east.
