Sottie

Sottie (French: sotie , from sot "fool"), German also fool's game , is the name of a kind of dramatic antics or satires which, like morality and farces, belonged to the early days of French drama and whose characters were fools.

They were performed by the Enfants sans souci , then also by the members of the Bazoche , and were particularly distinguished by the clumsiness of their roles and boldly censuring language.

Since Pierre Gringore , who wrote many such plays, mostly with typical fool figures such as le prince Sot , la mère Sotte , etc., they have been carried out and given a political or ecclesiastical satirical escalation.

In the first half of the 17th century the Sottias gradually disappeared from the stage as from the street. In Germany, where they spread from France, they merged with the carnival games .
