South Wimbledon Underground Station
South Wimbledon is an underground station on the London Underground in the London Borough of Merton . It is located on the border of the Travelcard tariff zones 3 and 4. At the station building, the four main streets Merton High Street (in the east), Merton Road (in the north), Kingston Road (in the west) and Morden Road (in the south) cross. In 2013, 3.79 million passengers used this station served by Northern Line trains.
The station opened on September 13, 1926 as part of the extension from Clapham Common to Morden . It is not in the Wimbledon district , but about one kilometer southeast of it. When the station opened, it was assumed that the name Wimbledon was associated with a higher social prestige than the actual Merton location. For reasons of geographical correctness, the route network plans and the station building were labeled with South Wimbledon (Merton) at the beginning . However, the addition of brackets gradually fell away over time.
Designed by Charles Holden , the station is a symmetrical modernist style building made of Portland stone . It comprises a high counter hall with three entrances, which is flanked on both sides by single-storey shop wings. The building has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1987 .
