A spaetzle board is usually 6 to 8 mm thick, almost 15 cm wide and about 20 to 25 cm long, with a handle on the upper narrow side to hold it. It is used to scrape spaetzle . It is pointed on the lower narrow side. After moistening with hot water ( to prevent the dough from sticking to the wood), the prepared spaetzle dough is applied to the spaetzle board and scraped into the hot water with a knife or a spaetzle scraper.

In 2006, an exhibition entitled Spätzle scraping, pressing, planing was shown in the Beuren open-air museum, as part of which a spaetzle shab competition was held. The winner did not use a conventional spaetzle board, but an in-house construction made from a CD case.
