The Space Surveillance Telescope is a reflector telescope with an aperture of 3.5 m and a field of view of 3.5 °. The telescope was developed by DARPA for the observation of satellites , space debris and other near-Earth objects and went into operation in early 2011. First Light was on February 15, 2011. The telescope was on the White Sands Missile Range in the US state of New Mexico ; the development cost 110 million US dollars. The telescope will be moved to Western Australia by 2016 and commissioned at the Harold E. Holt naval station as part of the Space Surveillance Network .

The telescope is constructed with three mirrors, the arrangement of which is known as Paul-Baker, Paul-Willstrop or Mersenne-Schmidt; the mirrors are followed by a multi-lens corrector . The structure of the telescope is similar to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope , but has CCD image sensors that are shaped to curve the image .
