Spacebox is a modular building concept by the Dutch architect Mart de Jong , in which prefabricated residential containers are put together to form a building. The aim is to provide cheap and quickly available living space.

Each of the units is fully furnished and includes all important living functions. The units can be moved and stacked. Most of them are made of plastic and offer around 20 m² of space. The design principles come from shipbuilding and aircraft construction.

The project has been successfully tested since 2004 in cooperation with student unions at six different university locations in the Netherlands. The problem, the lack of cheap and sufficient living space for students, could be eliminated.

In the past, the limited space inside and the inadequate sound insulation between the cubes proved to be disadvantageous.
