The Sparkasse Steele was the municipal savings bank of the formerly independent town of Steele an der Ruhr . When it was incorporated into the city of Essen in 1929, it became a branch of today's Sparkasse Essen . The building now serves as a cultural forum.

history

founding

The Sparkasse Steele was founded as the third Sparkasse in what is now Essen's urban area, after Essen and Werden , on January 1, 1864 at Kaiser-Otto-Platz. Well-known citizens of the town of Steele formed their first board: JWA Ostermann, Ignatz Hengler, Simon Rindskopf and Ferdinand Flensberg. Flensberg's uncle was the merchant Korte, whose house on Grendplatz served as the headquarters of the Sparkasse Steele from 1870.

Economic situation

The city of Steele was given an economic upswing by the still up-and-coming coal mining on the Ruhr. The decisive factor was the new connection between Steeles and the railroad. In 1861 the part of the railway line Witten / Dortmund – Oberhausen / Duisburg with today's station Steele-Ost (then Steele Hbf) went into operation. The Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company in 1863 joined the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel-Essen-Überruhr railway using the Ruhrbrücke with Steele Hbf. 1878 Steele-South Railway came up with the now-defunct railroad Mülheim-Hot-Altendorf (Ruhr) added. These new trade routes for hard coal brought a decisive upswing.

In 1870 the town of Steele had around 5,000 inhabitants. The total deposits of Sparkasse Steele at that time were around 700,000 Reichstalers, so that the per capita deposits were higher than those of the older savings banks in Essen and Werden.

New headquarters in Dreiringstrasse

In the years 1897 to 1898 the two-storey brick building was erected on what was then Friedrichstrasse (today Dreiringstrasse 7) as a new administration and cash desk. From then on it was popularly called the cash booth , because the city treasury also had offices in this building. The old coat of arms of the town of Steele is placed as a relief in the arched vestibule of the entrance.

When the Office Königssteele ( Königssteele , Eiberg , Horst and Freisenbruch ) was incorporated into Steele in 1926, the Amtssparkasse Königssteele was merged with the Sparkasse Steele on July 1, 1896. Just three years later, on August 1, 1929, it was incorporated into the city of Essen. Now the area of the Sparkasse Steele became the main branch XII of the Sparkasse Essen.

Later building use

In 1953 the old building on Dreiringstrasse, which survived the Second World War , was cleared. The Sparkasse moved into the new building on Kaiser-Otto-Platz, where the branch is still located today. It is roughly the place where the Sparkasse Steele was founded in 1864.

The building on Dreiringstrasse became a community center in 1979, today's Kulturforum. There is a café with an outdoor area on the ground floor. All other rooms on the ground, first and top floor are used for educational purposes, for cultural and social offers as well as for events of the adult education center , the workers' welfare and various associations.

In 1988 the brick building was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Essen.

As of March 2020, the entire building will be taken out of service by the end of 20121 due to extensive construction work. The leaseholders of the café on the ground floor take over another restaurant in the district. After the renovation there will be another restaurant in the building. In addition to the heating system, the sanitary equipment, the electrical installation, the fire protection and the accessibility, the roof and the brickwork will be completely renovated. In November 2019, the city of Essen stated costs of 2.34 million euros.
