geography

The Westphalian municipality of Königssteele bordered directly on the town of Steele, which had belonged to the Prussian Rhine Province since 1815 . The historical border between Steele and Königssteele ran from the north approximately along the line Nottebaumskamp - Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz - Bochumer Straße - Plaßweidenweg . By the end of the 19th century, Steele and Königssteele had grown together seamlessly and the municipal boundary now ran through the middle of the common town center.

Administrative history

The separation of Steele and Königssteele goes back to the year 1243, when the Essen Abbey had to cede the Königssteele, then called Steeler Berg , as well as Freisenbruch, Horst and Eiberg to the county of Mark as a result of the Isenberg turmoil . Since then, Königssteele has belonged to the Niederamt Bochum in the county of Mark.

The industrialization of Königssteele began in the 18th century with the construction of the Wisthoff glassworks and the sinking of the Bongerbank colliery .

In the 19th century, Königssteele formed a rural community in the Wattenscheid district of Bochum in the Westphalian administrative district of Arnsberg . In 1885 Königssteele came to the district of Hattingen and became the official place of the Königssteele office, which also included the communities of Freisenbruch , Horst and Eiberg .

On April 1, 1919, the four municipalities of the Königssteele Office were merged to form the new large municipality of Königssteele.

Due to the law on the new regulation of the communal borders in the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial districts , the majority of the office and municipality of Königssteele was incorporated into the city of Steele on April 1, 1926 and thus moved from the province of Westphalia to the Rhine province . The eastern parts of the old community of Eiberg fell to Wattenscheid and Linden-Dahlhausen and are now in Bochum .

The name of the district Königssteele is no longer used in most maps and city plans, but the Evangelical Parish of Königssteele still exists.
