A scupper or Speigat is an unlocked or by a non-return valve secured in the drain port bulwark of vessels through which rainwater or has come spray is discharged back into the water. The bulwark protects the ship and crew from overflowing water. The relatively small amount that still reaches the deck is diverted by scuppers. Instead of scuppers, small boats have either an open rail or bilge valves .

The word Speigatt is derived from the Low German words spit: spit, vomit and Gatt: hole, opening .
