speculation

Speculation (from Latin speculari to peek, to observe; to look into the distance from an elevated point of view) denotes:

  • in everyday language a hypothesis or a statement that is considered unprovable
  • Speculation (economy) : Someone buys / sells a thing or a security because he assumes that it will increase / decrease in value in the foreseeable future, with the aim of selling it at a profit after the increase in value.
  • a philosophical way of thinking, see speculation (philosophy)
