The play and adventure fountain in Bergheim

The play and adventure fountain is located in the middle of the pedestrian zone in the district town of Bergheim on Hubert-Rheinfeld-Platz.

History and architecture

The Aachen sculptor Wolfgang Binding created the play and adventure fountain out of granite and bronze in 1984 in collaboration with the Aachen stonemason Bruno Schwarzenberg. You can see four children playing with a cat who are grouped in a circle in front of a young tree. From the cat, which touches the foot of the tree with its tail, a compositional arc leads over the staggered head height of the children back to the tree, to the trunk of which the oldest child holds on with outstretched arm. Humans and animals are united in a playful act, in harmony with themselves and nature. Binding wants to embody human activity that is free of purpose. The principle of the spiral arching is continued in the circular fountain basins, which are stepped around the central cylinder and whose water closes in a cycle. A proud bronze peacock also belongs to the fountain.

Children use it as a play opportunity, especially in summer.
