The red-scaled head tyrant ( Lophotriccus pileatus ) is a songbird from the tyrant family . It is native to Central and South America in five subspecies.

features

The red-scaled head tyrant reaches a body length of 10 cm. The back is predominantly olive-colored, the underside whitish to pale yellow. The front skull is brown, the face area yellowish brown. The feathers of the hood , which is usually not erect, are reddish-brown at the tip, even when worn. The wings and tail are dark, the wings with two yellowish wing bands. The chest and throat are striped dark olive.

distribution and habitat

The red-scaled-head tyrant occurs from Costa Rica to northern Venezuela and to southern Peru. It is usually found at heights of 600 to 1200 m and inhabits primary rainforests, secondary forests and forest edges.

Way of life

The red-scaled-head tyrant feeds mainly on insects.

Subspecies

The following five subspecies are distinguished:

  • Lophotriccus pileatus hypochlorus Berlepsch & Stolzmann , 1906 - Peru.
  • Lophotriccus pileatus luteiventris Taczanowski , 1884 - Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama.
  • Lophotriccus pileatus pileatus ( Tschudi , 1844) - Andes, Ecuador to Peru.
  • Lophotriccus pileatus santaeluciae Todd , 1952 - Venezuela, Colombia.
  • Lophotriccus pileatus squamaecrista ( Lafresnaye , 1846) - Andes, Colombia and Ecuador.
