Traction winch

A traction sheave winch or capstan winch is a special type of cable winch .

With a cable winch, the tensile force is created directly on the cable drum during the winding process with the continuous leverage of the drum circumference on the incoming cable.

In contrast, a traction sheave winch has two multi-groove traction sheaves arranged one behind the other , over which the rope runs in a single layer and then into a separate rope storage drum. The traction sheaves with the revolving rope are braced against each other. If the traction sheaves are driven, the tension creates a frictional force that moves the rope.

The installation options of this construction method are somewhat more versatile than with the cable winch, as the separate components can be installed more easily in a vehicle frame. As with any other winch, the performance of a traction sheave winch can be increased by pulleys. The disadvantage is that this pulling device does not allow idling when the rope is pulled out.
