The Sportbad am Thurmfeld is a public swimming pool of the city of Essen in the Nordviertel district , which was opened on January 4, 2016.

history

The swimming pool is located on the so-called Thurmfeld , a fallow, former industrial site on Reckhammerweg / corner Bottroper Straße, north of the campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen . The municipal gas works Reckhammerweg and the neighboring Maschinenbau AG Union , which existed until 1943, had been here since 1867 . After the Second World War and the later demolition of two gasometers from the former gas works, the site was left fallow. Before construction began on the swimming pool, around ten million euros were required to clean up the soil.

After the last new swimming pool in the city, the Gildehofbad from 1987, which was closed again in 1993, the City Council of Essen decided to build a new swimming pool for the first time in July 2011 as part of the municipal swimming pool concept. This sports pool at Thurmfeld was built to replace the old main pool in the east quarter . The architecturally interesting main pool was opened in 1958, classified as ailing in a pool report from the Federal Association of Public Pools at the beginning of 2008 and closed on December 30, 2015.

The topping-out ceremony for the new sports pool took place on February 26, 2015. In August 2015, the basins were filled with water and the company's own combined heat and power plant and the water treatment plant were put into operation. As a result, the sports pool was handed over to the sports and pool operations of the city of Essen in November . The official inauguration by Mayor Thomas Kufen took place on January 9, 2016. The construction costs were put at 9.7 million euros.

Between March 19, 2017 and July 18, the sports pool was closed due to a defective water filter system.

Furnishing

The Sportbad am Thurmfeld is located on a plot of around 12,300 square meters, with the building itself taking up almost 4,000 square meters. A possible extension with outdoor facilities is reserved for the surrounding area. Externally, parts of the building are clad with a COR-TEN steel facade.

The swimming area has a sports pool with eight 25-meter lanes, which at one end has a diving area with a one- and three-meter board and a lifting floor that can be used to change the water depth. In addition, there is a system for time control, as the pool will be preferred by clubs and school classes. As a second pool, there is a teaching pool with a size of 16.7 by 10 meters and a complete lifting floor. There is room for a good 500 spectators on a four-tier grandstand, 240 of them on seats.
