Spreader pants

Spreading pants (actually Tübingen hip flexion splint ) on an infant

The spreader pants or Tübingen hip flexion splint according to Bernau is an orthopedic aid that keeps both hip joints flexed and spread apart in infants with congenital hip dysplasia . It therefore belongs to the orthoses . This increases the pressure of the femoral head on the socket, which promotes the growth of the joint socket.

The indication for spreading pants is made if the sonography of the infant hip does not show age-appropriate development of the joint. With this simple tool, many operations can be avoided. For this reason, for example, in the 1960s and 1970s, prior to the widespread availability of sonography, special diaper pants (similar to spreading pants) were recommended to prevent hip joint malformations.
