The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress ( SLMC , Tamil சிறீலங்கா முஸ்லிம் காங்கிரசு ) is a small political party that sees itself as representing the interests of the Muslim population in Sri Lanka .

Party history

The SLMC was founded on September 11, 1981 in Kattankudy, Batticaloa district by the Sri Lankan attorney MHM Ashraff, together with other Muslim Sri Lankan intellectuals. The aim was to create a political interest group for the Muslim minority in Sri Lanka, which is mainly concentrated in the Eastern Province . Marhoom AL Ahmed became the first chairman. On November 29, 1986 the SLMC was converted into a political party and it was officially recognized as a political party on February 11, 1988.

Muslims, also known as Moors (“Moors”), make up almost 10% of the population of Sri Lanka, speak predominantly Tamil and their relationship with the Sinhalese Buddhist majority population is not free of tension. The SLMC sees itself as a lobby group for Muslims and not primarily as a Tamil party. During the civil war he did not take sides for the Tamil separatists and therefore came into conflict with the Tamil Tigers .

Programmatically, the SLMC does not see itself as an Islamist party. In the party program he advocates a pluralistic Sri Lankan society in which all minorities participate proportionally and have equal rights. Sinhala , Tamil and English are said to be national languages on an equal footing. An autonomous region for the Muslim minority is to be set up in the north and east of the country. The introduction of Sharia law is rejected.

Participation in elections

After the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka in 1994 , the SLMC was allied with the People's Alliance , a party alliance led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Before the 2001 general election , the SLMC parliamentarians gave up their support for the SLFP government. In the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka in 2004 , the party won 2.02% of the vote, 5 of the 225 seats in Sri Lanka's parliament . In the 2010 general election , the SLMC ran with other parties under the banner of the United National Party (UNP). The SLMC also entered into an electoral alliance with the UNP in the 2015 parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka .
