Since the 19th century, the first Orthodox church congregations of Ukrainian emigrants emerged in the USA and Europe.

In 1947 the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church was founded in Germany and other countries after the church was banned in the Soviet Union. From 1995 to 1998 the foreign eparchies separated from the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church and submitted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
